Air Canada embarks on Extreme Makeover

This from Brent Jang, Transportation Reporter from the Globe and Mail:

Air Canada will unveil new plane interiors in 2007 as it seeks to gain a competitive edge by rolling out a revitalization program named Project XM: Extreme Makeover.

The stars of the $300-million project are touch-screen panels on seatbacks. Passengers will use their fingers to press options displayed on the screens, then sit back and enjoy beefed-up video and audio entertainment, said Montie Brewer, Air Canada's president and chief executive officer.

"Every seat on every aircraft will be replaced," Mr. Brewer said in a year-end interview.

Air Canada's offering includes on-demand movies and a selection of pre-recorded news broadcasts and TV shows, but there isn't live programming -- a feature carried by rival WestJet Airlines Ltd.

Montreal-based Air Canada expects to have two-thirds of its fleet of 200 aircraft refurbished by summer, with the makeover project scheduled for completion by the end of 2007. The entire cabin will get a facelift, including the introduction of lie-flat seats in business class on overseas flights. So far, in a preliminary phase, 14 planes have had their interiors finished and are now in service.

Another feature on Air Canada's seatback screens will be interactive games such as puzzles and card games. There will also be three-prong plugs for laptops, and USB ports to recharge iPods and BlackBerry devices.

Air Canada's new in-flight entertainment system will be free initially, but the carrier wants to eventually generate revenue, perhaps through some type of pay-for-view initiative or tailor-made offerings.

Under one scenario, consumers who pay a higher fare would enjoy first-run movies, while those who choose the lowest-fare Tango class would receive basic offerings such as pre-recorded TV shows. On the audio side, there will be an array of music channels, with content provided by Canadian Satellite Radio Holdings Inc.'s XM Canada brand.

NCL Pearl - Review

Karron McGoey from our Travel My Way office just returned from the inaugural cruise of the new NCL Pearl. Here's her report:

Well as you all know, I have just returned from the inaugural cruise aboard the NCL Pearl. What a fabulous ship! It even has it's own bowling alley with 4 lanes!

There are over 500 cabins with balconies ranging from basic ocean view with balcony up to Deluxe Owners suites. They have a category called Courtyard Villas where there are 10 villas and they have access to a separate pool, hot tub, steam room etc. These suites are amazing, and naturally they have concierge service. Clients need never mingle with other guests if that is their pleasure. But why wouldn't they? They would miss way too much of the great amenities aboard this new ship.

I cannot even begin to tell you about the 12 restaurants, 13 different bars including a champagne bar and the Maltings Beer and Whiskey bar, the casino, the rock climbing wall, the bowling alley (Blizz Ultra Lounge). This really is an incredible ship and anyone who thinks NCL is the same old NCL is going to be very surprised.

There was a guest on the Pearl who had worked for over 20 years with Holland America and decided to retire and just do groups. For whatever reason, he was invited on the Pearl...he was blown away. He could not believe how great it was. NCL has undergone an unbelievable change in the last few years and you can put your clients on this ship and know that they will be impressed. This definitely rivals Holland America and Princess. In fact, with their freestyle dining - why would anyone want to cruise on anything else.

NCL is without a doubt my favourite cruise line so far out of all of the cruise lines I've been on, with the exception of Celebrity. There is just so much going for them. The food is great and it is as good in the dining room as it is in the specialty restaurants. Consider the NCL line. By the end of 2010, they will have the youngest fleet on the seas. They have another ship NCL Gem coming out next year and the year after they are planning on launching F3's. They won't tell us anything about them yet - they just say "watch for them."

Free style dining isn't for everyone. Some clients like the regiment of going for dinner at 6:30pm or 8:30pm and dressing to the "nines". This cruise line isn't for them, but how many times have we had clients tell us the main reason they won't cruise is because they wear a suit to work and will not wear one on vacation. On these ships, they don't have to. Resort casual is the dressiest they need be and then they don't have to even go that far if they don't want to. There were guests dressed to the hilt and other ones in slacks and golf shirts.

"Simply Irresistible" was the theme of their inaugural voyage and it really was!!!

AC Holiday Travel Tips

With the peak holiday travel season upon us, Air Canada has offered the following advice to travellers:

BAGGAGE INFORMATION
Carry-on baggage allowance will be strictly applied to meet the needs of all passengers. Customers should keep in mind the airline's maximum carry-on baggage allowance is one standard article 23cm x 40cm x 55cm weighing a maximum of 10 kg, and one personal article 16cm x 33cm x 43cm weighing a maximum of 10 kg. More information on carry-on baggage information is available at aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/baggage/carry-on.html .
In addition standard carry-on baggage allowance is restricted to one article for passengers connecting to/from/via London Heathrow airport.
Checked baggage allowance is available at: aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/baggage/checked.html .

Gifts
To facilitate possible security inspection requirements, customers carrying gifts on board the aircraft should preferably keep them unwrapped. Any packages that do not comply with carry-on baggage limitations will have to be checked and must be suitably packed. Gifts should be identified as such.

Packing tips
Luggage should be clearly identified inside and out with permanent and temporary addresses, and all loose straps should be removed. Customers should keep all valuables including medication, jewelry and cash in their carry-on luggage. When carrying on an electronic device such as a cellular phone or laptop computer, ensure it is in full working order to avoid confiscation by security.

Knives or “knife-like” objects or cutting instruments of any kind are not allowed in carry-on luggage. These objects must be packed in checked baggage. Some toys such as toy guns and toy knives and most sports equipment including hockey sticks and ski poles must also be checked.

Reminder: Pet embargo during peak holiday travel
To effectively handle the high volume of baggage loads experienced during peak holiday travel, pets will not be accepted in the checked baggage compartment from December 18, 2006 throughout January 7, 2007 . More information is available at aircanada.com /en/travelinfo/airport/baggage/pets.html .

What Students Want

Okay, Christmas might seem like a weird time to talk about students, but for those crafty clever kids out there you'll appreciate my message.

Christmas usually means families getting together and sharing laughs, food and presents. Its also the time when well-meaning graduates to be can start to put a bug in your family's ear. The ultimate gift is a trip. We all know that.

Did I get one? Nope. Did I eventually take one myself. Yup.

Why? Because graduation is that time in life when you are free for a few moments to just breathe and get yourself ready for your next challenge. Whether it is a cliche or not, free time is hard to come by as an adult, so make good use of that break when you can. In fact, if you ask any adult out there, they would probably say that they wished they had more time to travel.

Well, chances are that Grandma and Grandpa are not that keen on seeing you backpacking around South East Asia on you own. But there is a safe and reliable way to see the world with traveller's your own age and that's Contiki. These guys specialize in trips for 18-35 year olds with over 100 itineraries in Europe, North America and Australia and New Zealand.

So why not suggest to the clan this year that they chip in and help you take a trip for your graduation? If you travel with Contiki you'll have a hassle free vacation that includes sightseeing, unique accommodation and sleek air-conditioned transport to get you around. After 40 years in the biz, they have figured out all the best places to take you, and have learned from countless trips the perfect blend of sightseeing, adventure, free time, fun, local culture and socializing.

Best of all - a Contiki vacation is cheaper than doing it on your own. Now that's something your family can appreciate.

Walking Tour of Turkey

I am dying to go to Turkey. It is the next destination on my radar. Why? Turkey is a land of striking variety – a vibrant crossroads where continents and cultures meet. Throughout history, more than a half-dozen great races have contributed to this exciting cultural mosaic.

One of the best ways of discovering this magical place is with Butterfield & Robinson’s Turkey Walking trip. Discover hand-carved churches buried in rock formations, biblical sites, ghost towns, an underwater archaeology museum and, of course, the famous baths. Meet rug-makers and poets and take in a whirling dervish ritual.

Along the way, meals are locally prepared specialties – this means fresh Mediterranean fish and grilled meats done to perfection.

Mid-trip, you abandon the soil for travel by gulet (a traditional Turkish yacht), making land daily to discover the best of the Mediterranean coast. And on your final night you take residence at the exquisite Marmara Hotel in Bodrum. There is a light walk for those who choose – but the hotel boasts a stellar spa, so you might just find yourself staying in today.

Even with days packed full of activities and events, what you’ll most likely take away from a visit to Turkey is the extraordinary hospitality of the locals. If you stopped and accepted every offer of çay (Turkey’s national drink), a simple hike would become a lifelong journey.
Sound cool? I think so too.

Insider Advice: Booking Sun Packages Online

A lot of my friends are just like me - we are comfortable with the Internet, we do all our research there and we occasionally buy stuff on it. However when faced with a big purchase like a sun holiday, we get a little nervous about booking.

I took a chance about three years ago and paid for my sun package online. I admit it made me nervous and I saw that there was an opportunity to do this better. So I contacted a travel agency client of mine and suggested that he take his agency online. Well one thing led to another and the next thing I knew I was working in the travel business and we launched our site www.travelmyway.ca two years ago.

I certainly got a crash course on the travel world and how it all works. And it might surprise you to know about how sun packages are priced and sold. The underlying thing is that buying online is not scary and prices are really very transparent.

Okay, here's the scoop. The Internet has been the great leveler for everyone in the business - tour operators and travel agents. In an online environment, we are all created equal. Meaning that all travel professionals and consumers online get their information from the same source - the tour operators themselves. The price you pay is dependant on two things: when you buy and from whom.

Let's look at "when" first. The sun package world is big business and the GTA is one of the most competitive markets in the world. Tour Operators for the most part carry similar or the same properties. So the only thing that differentiates them is usually price. Don't be fooled. A tour operator can change their prices on a daily or even hourly basis all in a bid to compete against other tour operators and to sell off as much space as they can. So, for the consumer it is a bit of a guessing game as to when to buy. This explains why prices can go up or down from week to week, day to day or even hour to hour.

What I tell my friends is that they need to make a decision based on their own comfort level. If they have a particular property chosen, then I say book it as soon as you decide. The difference of a hundred dollars or so may seem like a lot now, but when you are on vacation and you love where you are staying, you'll be happy that you invested in your hard earned holiday.

If you don't really care where you stay and you have maximum flexibility, then waiting can save you some extra dollars. Sometimes you will find a great deal on a nice property. However, sometimes all that is left is the bottom of the barrel if you know what I mean. There are some properties that really are "last resort."

Okay, now the "who." Buying on the Internet is really quite secure. If you are banking online then you can purchase online. So can you drop three thousand on a website? Absolutely. But there is more to buying online than credit card security, you have to feel confident that there is a credible company behind the scenes making sure your transaction is completed.

In the end, no one is really making that much money off of these products anymore. We call it the commodification of travel. Most online websites simply markup the price from a tour operator with a small service fee. That's all we do. We have leveled the playing surface. If you do any research at all, you'll see that online prices are practically identical with variations of only around $10 at most.

So if our prices are practically identical, then how do you make a decision? I say to my friends that they should book with us because we are a small office that cares about every transaction on our site. We have a group of agents monitoring the bookings at all times and they follow up on every online booking with the tour operator as well as the customer. And if you have any questions after you book, you are calling into an office not a call centre. Real agents with lots of experience.

As I tell my friends, it just makes sense to buy sun packages online. You can research and find the right product, and you will get the best price for it. Booking online with an experienced agency makes sense because when you have more complicated travel plans you have an experienced agent that can help you out. An issue comes up when you are on holiday? A call to the office puts an experienced advocate in your corner. This way you get the best of both worlds.

Top 10 Airport Restaurants

Okay, we all know that airplane food is horrible, but to add to insult, you really can't fly anywhere in the States these days and get anything more than a bag of pretzels. So what to do? Here is a handy guide to the best food options at the top ten busiest airports in the USA from Rob Lovitt of MSNBC:

Atlanta: From blackened catfish to secret-recipe fried chicken, Paschal’s Restaurant in Concourse C is legendary for its down-home southern cooking. Fluffy biscuits, candied yams, and collard greens — it’s all there, but be sure to save room for their famous peach cobbler. If you don’t have time for a sit-down meal, there are quick-serve counters in the Atrium and Concourse A.

Chicago: Located in Terminal One at O’Hare, the Berghoff Café is run by a local family whose restaurant roots go back to 1898. Long known for its hearty sandwiches, the café also serves omelets, salads, and pizza in a clubby setting of oak and stained glass. Try the hand-carved corned beef or panini-style Reuben — with a glass of their private-label, Berghoff lager or Dortmunder-style beer.

Los Angeles: The first thing you notice at Eaturna in Terminal 1 at LAX is the complete lack of heat lamps and deep fryers. Promoting “healthy food on the fly,” this take-out operation offers wraps, salads, and sandwiches that utilize organically grown produce, hormone-free meat, and all-natural ingredients. Even the Belgian chocolate brownies are made with organic sugar and flour.

Dallas: With two outlets at DFW (in Terminals A and D), La Bodega Winery is the country’s only licensed winery at an airport. Serving their own wines and those of several other Texas wineries, they feature 30 varieties for tasting, by the glass, or in bottles to go. Add in an hors d’oeuvre menu with smoked salmon, Italian meats, and fine cheeses, and you can almost enjoy being stuck at the airport.

Las Vegas: Don Alejandro’s Texan Grill has been a local institution since it opened in McCarran Airport’s Terminal 1 in 1994. Owner Alejandro Alvarez has adapted his mother’s Tex-Mex recipes — the carne asada and Texicali beef sandwich are nice and spicy — and as many as 2,000 customers a day seem to approve of the results.

Denver: Longtime football fans remember Winston Hill as a fearsome offensive lineman for the New York Jets (1963-1976); fans of good food know him as the man behind the barbecue sauce at Red Rocks Bar in Denver Airport’s Jeppesen Terminal. Barbecue brisket, barbecue chicken, barbecue turkey sandwiches — it’s all finger-licking good, but you’ll probably still want extra napkins.

New York: For some, airport sushi could be a scary concept, but the chefs at Deep Blue Sushi in JFK’s Terminal 6 (JetBlue) clearly know their ebi (shrimp) from their unagi (eel). Watch them slice, dice, and roll at the counter, settle into one of the overstuffed sofas nearby, or get an order to go and savor your seatmates’ looks of longing when you unwrap it onboard.

Phoenix: Opened in summer 2006, Flo’s Shanghai Café in Terminal 4 is the latest offering from Florence Chan, owner of several Phoenix-area restaurants. Step through the restaurant’s classic moon gate, order at the counter, and take a seat while your food is made to order. In the morning, try their egg foo yong omelet with pickled vegetables; later, the Mongolian beef or sweet almond chicken.

Houston: The dark woods and historic photos at Bubba’s Seafood Grill in Terminal C at George Bush Intercontinental recall a 1930s steakhouse, but the name says it all. We’re talking red snapper, fried catfish, and crab cakes, along with crawfish etouffe and spicy seafood gumbo. Belly up to the bar or grab a table by the windows, where you can watch the big jets come and go until it’s time to leave.

Minneapolis-St. Paul: Vegan soups, salads with organic greens, and sandwiches with yeast-free breads are among the all-natural offerings at French Meadow Bakery & Café in Concourse F, an outlet of the long-popular café in Uptown Minneapolis. A second outlet, complete with a bar, is expected to open in the Northstar Crossing area later this year. Organic martini, anyone?

Tech Toys for Travellers This Season

Here are my top gift ideas for anyone who travels a lot or has someone on their list who does. Whether its for work or pleasure, these gifts are sure to please:

Bose Noise Canceling Earphones - yup, they work. Sure they are expensive for headphones (+$300/pair) but have you flown lately? Imagine being able to drown out the chatty neighbour, the engine noise, and all the usual comings and goings on the plane. These are a god send for anyone who does any kind of long haul flights of over 4 hours or if you take charters often.

Apple iPod - Maybe this should have been first, but most travellers have one already and if they don't - this is a no-brainer. If you fly a lot - get the video version. If they are constantly driving - then any size will do. I own two and can't imagine life without them. They are small, efficient and cool. They work. Believe the hype - get an iPod.

Digital Books - there is nothing better than having a book read to you. Well, newspapers and magazines too if you want. Imagine the newspaper being read to you while you go are stuck in traffic on your daily commute? How about enjoying a trashy novel while lying on a beach without the heavy book? Digital books just make sense and the library is growing daily. You can either pop them into your iPod or burn them onto a CD. Buying is just as easy, they are available at Chapters, Amazon or iTunes websites, or better yet, get a subscription at Audible.com

Satellite Radio - This is the ultimate gift for the road warrior on your list. When you spend that much time in a car, even an iPod can get old fast. What you want is a radio station that plays all your favourite music, all day long, without any commercials, no matter where you travel in North America. Simple. I prefer Sirius but have had XM too. I like the Canadian content better on Sirius and their New Wave station consistently plays all my favourite songs.

Azul Blue - A New Concept in All-Inclusive!

Karisma Hotels & Resorts has gone the high-tech route to ensure guests won’t find any unwelcome surprises at its Azul Blue Hotel + Spa.

The 96-unit Riviera Maya property, which will be fully open Dec. 15, is inviting guests to share their preferences with hotel staff through Karisma’s www.karismahotels.com web site, with an Azul Blue section enabling upcoming vacationers to specify what type of pillows, linen, aromatherapy, food and other items they wish to have on their vacation.

In fact, says Lubo Krstajic, Karisma’s VP of sales and marketing, couples recalling a song that has particular significance for them can notify Azul Blue staff of it through the web site and then hear it upon entering their suite. If the hotel doesn’t have it already, those planning to stay there are invited to e-mail it.

“We will make sure that song is playing in the suite,” vows Krstajic, who adds that having guests communicate personal preferences before their arrival is all part of the hotel’s “stress-free” philosophy.

“Everything is arranged beforehand as the client likes. The concept is completely different than any other hotel in the Riviera Maya.”

Krstajic also notes that Karisma properties don’t have buffet restaurants, opting for the a la carte route instead, which he says is a classier form of dining. The “gourmet-inclusive” approach means there are no cash transactions, and guests don’t sign for their meals.

Azul Blue guests can also expect to find plenty of choices of each type of alcohol, Krstajic continues.

Krstajic acknowledges that the trend in the Riviera Maya has been to all-inclusives, but not all vacation-ers want that type of experience, he says, and so Karisma decided to open the Azul Blue, which it labels as boutique property.

AMENITIES

Azul Blue suites feature king or queen beds, wide-screen plasma TVs, marble hydro-jet tubs, Mexican décor, iPods, mini-bars, wireless Internet, drinks, and aromatherapy according to guest preferences and butler service provided by butlers trained by the Guild of Professional English Butlers.

The hotel spa has 10 treatment rooms and a temazcal, a purifying steambath ritual that began with the Maya.

Other hotel amenities include three restaurants, including Yuzu, which serves Asian dishes; three bars, one of them a piano bar; a fitness club that offers the likes of yoga, tai chi and an equipment room; four outdoor whirlpools; DVD library; cooking, tequila and Spanish lessons; nightly entertainment and live music; meeting rooms; and a gift shop. Nanny service is available; The hotel has meeting rooms, and there is an on-site weddings co-ordinator.

Krstajic reports that those staying at the resort, near the Maya ruins of Tulum, won’t find many other vacationers when they walk along the shore by the property. “On those beaches, you feel like Robinson Crusoe.”

Among tour operators that are offering Azul Blue are Air Canada Vacations and Conquest Vacations. You can book this resort online at our website http://www.travelmyway.ca
