Crystal Cruises Announces Wimbledon Package

I'm up for a good martini as much as the next person, and part of what makes cruising so fun is the nightlife, so here's to Hal's new martinis, designed to make cruising on their line just a little bit more glamourous!

Yes, the Holland America Line has introduced a new menu of martini cocktails on board its fleet of 14 ships. Featured on the menu are 19 Grey Goose martinis and a sampler platter of mini, specialty martinis called the martini flight.

Showcasing mixology at its best, a new martini flight will feature six of the menus premier martinis. Air Canada Jazz closes Hamilton operations

Well I suppose we knew it was coming...higher fuel costs are going to trigger a number of consequences in the travel industry. This just in...

Regional airline Air Canada Jazz has begun to scale back its operations to tackle higher fuel costs by announcing plans to close its Hamilton operations at the end of July, a move that will affect 14 customer service agents and eliminate 10 daily flights between the airport west of Toronto and airports in Ottawa and Montreal.

This most likely will not affect the Hamilton Airport all that much as WestJet is their main airline, but it does affect all those business clients who prefer to fly out of Hamilton than fight traffic into the GTA to fly from Pearson.

I'm sure every industry has its ups and downs, but travel continues to be a topsy turvey one riding the waves of customer trends, industry consolidation, the Internet and now, rising fuel costs.

Unlimited Summer Flying with new AC Pass

Air Canada is taking “the road” out of summertime travel with the return of its Ontario and Quebec summer passes, which provide unlimited intra-provincial flying during July and August for $1,099.

Available for sale through June 26, the Ontario Pass and the Quebec Pass are valid for Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz flights between July 1 and Aug. 31.

The passes provide for unlimited travel, within their respective provinces, between 12 destinations in Ontario and nine in Quebec, with certain exceptions in each province.

The Ontario Pass is not valid for point-to-point travel between Toronto and Ottawa (connections involving these two cities are permitted). The Quebec Pass does not permit travel to or from Iles de la Madeleine.

Pass prices include the fuel surcharge and all other fees and surcharges except G.S.T. and Q.S.T where applicable.

Air Canada to charge $25 for checking second bag

Following the lead of other North American carriers, Air Canada announced that passengers will have to pay $25 to check a second piece of luggage on all economy-class flights within North America. The change, it said, was prompted by "record high and unrelenting fuel costs."

The change will take effect on July 15, and applies to customers who buy Tango and Tango plus tickets. The new charge won't apply to business-class travellers or international flights.

Although WestJet has not announced that it will follow suit, do not be surprised if they make a similar announcement in the coming weeks.

Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and US Airways announced earlier this week that their passengers would be charged for checking a second bag.

Atlantic City wins over Las Vegas!

I know most of your gamblers and thrill seekers think of Las Vegas first - but pay attention, Atlantic City has just won a "stunning" upset over long time rival Las Vegas in a crucial competition.

A new hospitality study found New Jersey scored ahead of Las Vegas in virtually every category from value for price, to sophistication and pampering. The survey was particularly surprising because New Jersey’s Atlantic City at 30-years-old is a relative newcomer to the gaming market compared to Nevada, which has been around for 77 years.

"Compared to the Las Vegas Strip, Atlantic City guests are more satisfied with their hotel and casino experience," said the survey, published in Hotel & Motel Management magazine.

Seventh-eight percent of Atlantic City visitors were "very likely to recommend" the resort to others, but just 59% of Las Vegas visitors were as likely to do so, according to the San Rafael, California based Market Metrix.

Princess Plans to Add Adult-Only Areas to Entire Fleet

Princess plans to add quiet, adult-only deck areas to its entire fleet of ships, expanding the popular Sanctuary spots that debuted on the Crown Princess in 2006.

Only the Crown and Emerald Princess currently have Sanctuary, but the Island Princess, Grand Princess, Star Princess and upcoming Ruby Princess will be outfitted by the end of this year, and the remainder of the fleet by 2010.

These kid-free, low-music zones have become increasingly popular in the last couple years. Cruise lines like Disney and Royal Caribbean have had versions of adult areas on their ships since the 90’s, but Princess took it to the next level.

The Sanctuary is a roped off area that was initially free, but became so popular when the Crown debuted, the line quickly began charging a $10 fee for about four hours of relaxation time.

For the price, cruisers can lounge on plush, outdoor furniture while listening to piped-in spa music, while stewards bring around chilled face towels and Evian water atomizers. For additional fees, guests can order from a “healthy” food and beverage menu or rent MP3 players with pre-loaded relaxation tunes.

Carnival Cruise Lines took a cue from Princess and began adding quiet, adult-only “Serenity” areas to its ships this year as part of its $250 Fantasy-class upgrade initiative. The Serenity is so popular on the Imagination, the first ship to get it, that Carnival has said it may expand the concept to the rest of the fleet as well.

For now, Carnival has no plans to charge for use of that area, but if its popularity continues, the line has not ruled out the possibility of assessing a fee.

Okay, this seems a little out of left field, but Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with EMI Music, has introduced Fairmont Music Store, a new online retail initiative that will provide guests access to digital music exclusively from EMI Music’s catalog.

Located at www.fairmontmusicstore.com, the music boutique will be officially launched this spring. Through the new music portal, guests will be able to browse an extensive catalog of music and downloadable songs from top-selling EMI artists such as such as Coldplay, Norah Jones, Keith Urban, Anne Murray and Lenny Kravitz.

As part of this new music initiative, Fairmont will also extend additional benefits to members of its Fairmont President’s Club guest loyalty program, including preferred pricing on digital music, private access to exclusive song downloads and priority access to special events and concerts featuring EMI artists.

Princess bids farewell to traditional disembarkation process

Three cheers for Princess! The traditional “hurry up and wait” disembarkation process that has long been a cruise industry tradition is now history aboard Princess ships, as the line introduces a new streamlined farewell process for passengers.

Contrasted with the typical end-of-cruise departure where passengers listen to public address system announcements for their luggage tag colour to be called, Princess has debuted an efficient, more relaxed process for passengers leaving the ship.

Passengers are each given an assigned time and place to assemble on the final morning and are personally escorted to the gangway by a member of the ship’s staff, eliminating the guesswork as to the actual time passengers will be disembarking.

The new program is in the process of being rolled out fleetwide and has already been met with enthusiastic response from passengers. The new system eliminates loudspeaker announcements calling colour-coded departure groups and instead provides passengers with a letter the day before the end of the cruise that outlines their designated time to meet in an assigned public room, depending on their return air arrangements.

The revised system enables passengers to easily plan their morning without the uncertainty as to when they should prepare to depart the ship. It also eliminates passengers congregating in the ship’s atrium near the gangway, plus creates a more relaxed flow for morning breakfast.

Turf's Up on Celebrity Cruises

When Celebrity Solstice launches in December, the ship will present an industry first -- real, growing grass, set in an innovative new country club environment known as “The Lawn Club” on the top deck.

The half-acre Lawn Club will invite guests to enjoy bocce ball and croquet, practice their putting, picnic with a basket of wine and cheese, or simply feel the grass between their toes, while sailing the oceans of the world.

The area will also feature the Hot Glass Show, another first in the industry, developed in collaboration with The Corning Museum of Glass; the Patio on the Lawn; the Lawn Club Shop, and the Sunset Bar.

Celebrity worked with design firm Wilson Butler Architects to design the entire club area, then engaged a team of landscape architects and irrigation specialists along with turf and soil scientists at the University of Florida. Together, they conducted extensive research and tested a variety of grasses to determine which can withstand the winds, sun, shade and temperature variations that will affect the grass and soil as the ship sails in the Caribbean this winter. Other considerations included the ability of the grass to tolerate foot traffic, irrigation and day-to-day care and maintenance of the grass. Even the weight of the grass and soil had to be considered, as well as the water they absorb from the atmosphere and from irrigation.

The Lawn Club is over three times larger than New York’s Rockefeller Center ice skating rink (668 square metres); 1.7 times larger than an Olympic-size swimming pool; the equivalent of 8.2 tennis courts; 2.4 times the size of Centre Court at England’s Wimbledon Lawn & Tennis Club; and one-third the size of a regulation soccer field.

New US Travel Requirements

They warned us it was coming and now as of January 31st, oral declarations of citizenship alone will no longer be accepted by U.S. Customs.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you are entering the US by land or by sea, you'll need to show government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, ALONG WITH proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.

Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. And as always, passports and trusted traveller program cards – NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST – will continue to be accepted for cross-border travel.

Created in conjunction with Louis van Amstel, Emmy-nominated choreographer for ABC-TV’s “Dancing with the Stars,” and Cheryl Burke, two-time winner on the show, “Invitation to Dance” transports the world of professional ballroom dancing to the high seas. Guests sailing on Explorer have the opportunity to compete for the honour of best ballroom dancers at sea with the guidance of professional dancers, stylists and make-up artists.

Chosen during an evening of ballroom dancing at the beginning of each cruise, four couples are selected to participate in the “Invitation to Dance” production show later that week. Faith based airline - Vatican to offer charters

The Vatican may have territorial limits, its own post office and even a football tournament, but it has hitherto lacked what all real states offer: an airline.

However, since August the Vatican has launched its first charter flights for pilgrims from Rome to Lourdes, with some of the world's top religious destinations to follow, including the shrine of Fatima in Portugal and the shrine of the Madonna of Guadalupe in Mexico.

"The spirit of this new initiative is to meet the growing demand by pilgrims to visit the most important sites for the faith," Father Cesare Atuire at the Vatican pilgrimage office, the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, told La Repubblica. He said that with 8 million visitors a year, Lourdes was an obvious first destination.

The flights come thanks to a deal with Italian charter airline Mistral, whose blue and yellow colours coincidentally match the Vatican's, noted CEO Valerio Vaglio.

Mr Vaglio said the headrests on passengers' seats would sport the logo "I'm Searching for Your Face, Lord", while religious guides would be on hand, alongside the usual stewards.

Mistral was launched by the Italian action and comedy film star Bud Spencer and today it is controlled by the Italian post office. Mr Vaglio said that at night, the aircraft flying pilgrimage routes will have their seats removed and be converted back to flying sacks of mail.

Father Atuire hinted that luxury would not be a selling point. "The cost of the packages will bear in mind that the customers will be pilgrims," he said.

Opening for business in 2012 guests get to travel around the world in 80 minutes. Reservations will begin next year for the aluminium vessel made of five modules, which is to be launched by rockets into space.

The most expensive hotel room to-date, will give guests the opportunity to see the sunrise 15 times a day. Guests will also be able to participate in scientific experiments during their stay in the hotel, 450 km from earth.

The biggest challenge about hotel rooms in zero gravity – the bathrooms. Presumably that little difficulty will be resolved prior to lift off. Yah, no kidding!

New passport renewal rules

As of Wednesday, Canadian travellers waiting to get their passports renewed can expect simpler, speedier service, Ottawa says.

The federal government has scaled back the passport renewal procedure, in hopes of trimming wait times and alleviating Passport Canada's processing backlog, which accumulated last year after due to new U.S. government restrictions requiring Canadians to possess passports before flying into the U.S.

Under the new relaxed rules, which come into effect Wednesday, there is "no need for a guarantor, no need to resubmit your birth certificate or citizenship card, and no need for supplementary ID anymore," Passport Canada spokesman Francine Charbonneau said.

Reapplicants now only need to fill out a shorter form, include two updated photographs with their most recent passport, and pay an application fee.

The new rules affect only Canadian citizens who:
- Currently possess a passport that was issued after Jan. 31, 2002.
- Are at least 16 years old.
- Have never reported a passport lost, stolen or damaged.
- Lived in Canada when their last passport was issued.
- Apply using the same name that appears on the previous passport.

Security is still stringent, the agency said, but with 14,000 people making passport applications every day, the time it takes to deliver the document to Canadians should now be shorter.

What flying First Class gets you these days

Let's face it, the amenities and service flying these days has hit an all time low. Airlines have streamlined their costs to compete in the low fare world and have stripped out everything they can think of. Wondering what effect this might have had on First Class? Well, just the opposite.

"Right now, first class is all about creating an over-the-top experience for passengers," says Edward Plaisted, chief executive of Skytrax, a London-based airline and airport-quality ranking firm. At a time when some carriers have eliminated first-class altogether (in order to focus on business class), 35 others have not only kept it, but kicked it up a gilded notch. The ones keeping it, says Plaisted, are striving for "that wow factor."

Thinking wow - how about Singapore Airlines' first class, which gives their passengers a choice between Dom Perignon and Krug champagne, and while fliers change into their Givenchy sleep suits and slippers in the extra-large bathrooms, their seats are turned into actual beds with sheets, a down duvet and oversize pillows.

Emirates first-class seats are mini-suites with sliding doors offering passengers total privacy. Cathay Pacific actually has skillets and rice cookers on board for its top-tier fliers, which means that eggs are made to order and rice dishes are prepared fresh.

Of the roughly 35 airlines worldwide who do offer first class, fully flat beds, a three-to-one passenger-to-crew ratio (in business class, it is typically 10 or 15 passengers for one crew member), and sumptuous meals are par for the flight. However, a handful of carriers are trying to distinguish themselves by improving passengers' airport experience.

"Passengers complain that going to the airport is becoming more hellish with longer security lines and more time wasted before the flight," says Plaisted, "so some airlines are focusing on making the ground experience pleasurable for first-class fliers."

Qatar Airways is an example. First-class passengers flying out of Doha have access to a new separate $90 million terminal that resembles a five-star hotel with marble floors and cascading waterfalls. Passengers are cosseted from the moment they arrive at the airport. An attendant takes their bags, checks them in and leads them to a lounge, which has several fine-dining restaurants, a medical center and a spa with a sauna and Jacuzzi.

The luxe factor continues on board when fliers get caviar service, full-size pillows, white linen mattresses, Australian wool blankets and Bulgari toiletry kits. Each seat also has a 23-inch meal table, which lets two people dine across from each other, like in a restaurant. It's amenities like these that give Qatar the distinction of the best first-class airline in the world on Skytrax's annual survey, which lists the top 10 in this category.

How about Thai Airways? First-class passengers are waited on hand and foot from the moment they arrive in a private section of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi's Airport. A personal concierge checks them in and escorts them through security to a lounge with Wi-fi, a sauna and a spa that offers Thai massages. When flying into Bangkok, a concierge fast-tracks them through immigration, customs and bag pick-up. The perks onboard aren't bad either: passengers receive Bulgari toiletry kits and have a choice of 22 entrées, which can be pre-ordered.

Chilling out in Dubai

All right, in the category of "what will they think of next" - How about an ice lounge in Dubai?

Apparently things are pretty cool at Chillout in otherwise scorching Dubai. The new Canadian designed ice lounge, the first in the Middle East, offers a bar-restaurant where despite a sweltering outside temperature of 44 degrees, guests are eagerly crowding in to hang out in what amounts to a freezer.

A $17 cover charge gets you one cocktail and the rental of a hooded parka, woollen gloves and insulated shoes. Customers suit up outside, then spend a few minutes in the Buffer Zone, a room set at 5 degrees to acclimatize before entering the restaurant.

The walls, tables, chairs, cups, glasses, plates, the art on the wall, the sculptures portraying Dubai's skyline, the beaded curtains, the bar and an amazing two-metre-chandelier are all ice.

It took about 40,000 tonnes of ice to build the decor of the 220-square-metre restaurant. Every item was designed, carved and cut at a studio freezer at Iceculture Inc. in Canada and then shipped to Dubai.

Diffused lighting, from low-heat LED bulbs, constantly changes colours as it filters through the ice blocks. Sheepskin rugs cover the seats and non-alcoholic cocktails are served in ice glasses that are later tossed.

Hot drinks and food, from an Asian fusion menu, are served in stainless steel thermos containers but diners are warned that the food will get cold within 15 minutes,

The US $3 million spot, which opened in a Dubai mall in June, is expected to become a must-see tourist destination. However, it does raise questions about energy consumption in a country where, according to the World Wildlife Fund, the average person puts more demand on the global ecosystem than in any other country in the world.

New Royal Caribbean ship targeting newlyweds and families

HAL introduces ‘As You Wish’ dining

Holland America Line has just launched “As You Wish” dining, a new program that allows passengers to choose from either traditional pre-set seating and dining times, or a flexible dining schedule.

One level of the two-tiered restaurant will offer a flexible/open dining service from 5:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and the other will host two seatings, an early and main seating.

All you need to do is choose which dining style you prefer when booking your cruise. Guests who choose flexible seating can either make a reservation daily during the cruise up to 4 p.m. or simply walk up anytime during dining hours.

This is an interesting departure for Holland America, obviously feeling that they needed to be more flexible themselves to compete in the hot cruise market.

Three-and four-day getaways are replacing the traditional once-a-year two-week vacation that used to be American standard.

Work overload and the accompanying lack of time are some reasons why the two-week family vacation is becoming a thing of the past, according to various surveys.

"People are taking the mini-vacations," Sharif Aboushaba, general manager of the Hilton Melbourne Beach Oceanfront Hotel told Florida Today. He added:

"But here's the catch: They may take a shorter vacation, but they may take three or four of them, especially if it's driving within 100 miles. I call those vacations the 'Weekendscapes."

The shorter vacations are more common because of the difficulty of families in coordinating their various work, school and extracurricular schedules, say tourism officials.

Many employees will try to wrap three- and four-day getaways around holidays, such as Labor Day and Thanksgiving, so the impact on the workplace will be even less, said John Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger Gray & Christmas, a global outplacement consultancy.

"For the employer, these brief jaunts are the equivalent of a 10-minute power nap," he said. "They do not disrupt the rhythm of the workplace."

Other reasons for shorter vacations include too few vacation days and a lack of money. But it appears some Americans are getting away from vacations entirely, say some experts.

A recent study by Orbitz, the online travel company, found a drop in the number of people taking three-week or two-week vacations. The survey also found an increase in those taking a week or less. One-third of respondents said they took five or fewer days of vacation in the past year.

One in four of those surveyed said they felt their bosses did not encourage them to take vacations, and one in three said they stayed connected with their office via phone or computer while on holiday.

"Our sense is that people are busier than ever with their lives, their family activities, their kids," said Jeanenne Diefendorf of Orbitz. "So they find it difficult to take an extended vacation and easier to balance if they're only gone a couple of days."

Okay - this surprised me too. Who knew that Virginia was a big wine region in the world?

According to a July article in the Travel + Leisure Magazine, Virginia was named as one of the top five (yes - top five!) wine travel destinations in the world, and was the only American region to be featured in the Wine-Lover’s Guide: 5 Wine Regions to Visit Now article.

The article features Virginia and regions in Italy, Spain, Chile and New Zealand as destinations for those who are passionate about wine and food.

West Jet Goes Paperless

A first for North American airlines, WestJet has introduced “paperless boarding passes'' on some of its flights!

The company said the service was introduced in Victoria in late May and will be rolled out at destinations across Canada in the coming weeks.

How does it work? Well passengers show the pass displayed on their personal mobile device as they go through security and board their flight. Travellers have the option of choosing a paperless boarding pass during the online check-in process. An e-mail is then sent to their mobile device which they present at the airport.

I say - very cool. If you are a technoliterate or a road warrier this will definitely make your life easier.

London - Trip Review

As I mentioned in my previous post, I just got back from a trip to England. Five days were spent doing a work thing - but four precious days were spent in London. And I fall in love - with the city!

First things - I had a GREAT hotel. I know that maybe some people don't put a lot a weight on where you sleep, but I have stayed in far too many horrible and characterless rooms that I actually think a great hotel room is KEY to a good vacation. It sets the mood for the trip, it is your haven to come home to after a great day or better when you've had a terrible day.

My hotel was perfect. It was called the Apex City Hotel and it is just on the edge of "The City" part of London about a block from the Thames. Because I was there on the weekend, I got a super rate (around $150 Can per night - which is a steal in London) and the area was nice and quiet. The rooms have DVD players so that you can catch a movie instead of watching bad TV at night, the bathtubs are heavenly and have these cute little rubber ducks you can take home with you, and there are free papers to read in the morning. I didn't get a chance to check out the steam room (it was unusually warm in London) but on a rainy fall day, it would be awesome I think.

Location, location, location. A short walk to the Tube, the Tower of London (where you can hook into the tourist infrastructure of London), the Tower Bridge (one of the most recognizable and beautiful bridges in the world), and a nice walk along the Thames to restaurants, museums, bars, and shops.

The thing I loved so much about London was how visually exciting the city is. In one glance you can see so many forms of interesting architecture from centuries old to cutting edge modern. I loved the different neighbourhoods and once you get a feel for the city, it is surprisingly intimate.

I was a bit intimidated by the idea of visiting the city when I first planned to go there. There is simply so much to see and do. The first thing I would recommend, even though it is cheesy, is to take one of those double decker tourist bus tours. We grabbed tickets at the Tower of London and spent a couple of hours driving through the city. You see all the major sights but maybe more importantly you get a feel for where things are and how close you are to them.

I didn't have much time for the museums, but managed to hit the Tate Modern. It was great. Definitely plan to go up to the seventh floor and grab a glass of wine and enjoy the view of the Thames and Notre Dame Cathedral. Its breathtaking. Also, if you are more adventurous, then head out to the Brick Lane for some Indian food. I also recommend a walk through Notting Hill and maybe stopping at an outdoor cafe for coffee.

In general, I found London an amazing bustling and vibrant city. I am already planning my next getaway there. London is a competitive market so there are really reasonable flights including some great charter options. As I mentioned, if you plan on being there over a weekend you can pick up some great hotel bargains as well.

Review of BA and Heathrow Airport

Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't posted in a bit but I've been away in England for ten days and have been frantically trying to catch up now that I'm back. Later this week I'll post a review of my time in London, but for now here's the scoop on British Air and the Heathrow Airport.

If you are going to England or London in particular, avoid Heathrow if you can, or to be more specific avoid Heathrow Terminal 4 which unfortunately at this time means avoid flying BA. Despite the lovely service of the airline, flying out of Terminal 4 was a nightmare.

Shame. BA was a delightful airline to fly with. They were friendly, they have those fantastic little personal TVs at every seat and they actually serve complementary meals and drinks. The food was tasty, the drinks plentiful, the movie selection great and they even provided handy little toothbrushes and eye masks for sleeping. All in all - a really nice flying experience.

As a little tip, if you are flying over from Canada try and fly out on the latest flight (usually around 11:00pm) which means you are much more tired and will most likely get at least some sleep on the plane. You arrive a bit later, but at least you'll be functioning and you can most likely get right into your hotel room when you arrive.

Okay on to Heathrow...First you have to check in. So why are airlines suggesting that you check in online when you just have to line up all over again in the terminal just like before? Where was the time savings in this? Now you have to line up to check in your luggage instead of yourself and your luggage!

BA has taken up most of the check in space at the departures level of the terminal, but it didn't seem to help. There were enormous lines at all check in areas. We jokingly asked the employee who tagged our bags if it was always this busy and she looked up at us non-plussed and said that this wasn't busy at all. I don't even want to imagine what it would be like when it was actually "busy."

Once you check in you get into a very long lineup to get through security. When I say long - I mean the entire length of the departure floor and out the door to outside. It took a good hour an a half just to check in and go through security. Head my warning - GET TO THE AIRPORT EARLY!!!

Once we were inside, it didn't get much better. There are no "pre-boarding" or "boarding by rows" at Heathrow. They call your flight and you line up in an enormous line up yet again. Except this one winds down a walk way to the floor below where you have to get on a bus and then get trucked to your plane. Again, this took a very long time - a good thirty minutes to wind down to the bus, then sitting on the tarmac in the bus while the one ahead of you gets on the plane and then lining up to get on the plane and find your seat. That was a lot of standing around in overheated hallways just to get on the plane. We were all desperate for a gin by the time the plane got in the air.

The next time I fly into London I will be looking at first class charter (which really is almost the price of regular air and you get some nice perks) which would fly me into Stanstead or Gatwick or I will give Air Canada another go and at least be flying into Terminal 3 which I have been told is less chaotic. There are rumours of a new terminal opening in the future at Heathrow and I would assume that BA would take up residence as they are the flagship airline. If so, I would definitely consider flying with them again. But until then...the hassle just wasn't worth it.

Air Canada gives passengers option to help the environment

Air Canada is offering customers the choice to reduce the environmental impact of their travel in co-operation with Zerofootprint, a not-for-profit organization that operates carbon offset programs.

“Air Canada is committed to giving customers the opportunity to reduce the environmental effects of their travel. We not only want to make it possible for people to make good environmental choices, but we also want to play our part in addressing climate change,” says Charles McKee, vice-president of marketing at Air Canada.

“By working with Zerofootprint, we will make it easy for people to calculate the impact of their journey and mitigate those effects with a small, voluntary additional payment to support environmental projects that reduce greenhouse gases.”

Customers booking travel on Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz or their regional partners through will have an option to purchase a carbon offset for their trip. They will find information about carbon offsets, a calculator to determine the amount of carbon dioxide their trip will generate and the cost to offset it, and an easy way to pay the cost of offsetting their trip either with their ticket purchase or at another time.

For example, based on the specifications of Air Canada’s current aircraft, it will cost $19.20 for a customer to offset their share of carbon emissions on a return flight from Toronto to London and $12.80 for a return flight from Vancouver to Montreal.

From boutique hotels to high-end wilderness resorts, overindulgence is encouraged
writes Misty Harris, from CanWest News. The hottest trend in hospitality proves celebrity rehab centres aren't the only places leveraging excess.

From boutique hotels to Canadian fishing resorts, overindulgence is getting overnight privileges in travel packages that encourage guests to adopt the stars' philosophy that too much is never enough.

Some of the services on offer at these "immoderation accommodations" include in-room bars staffed by professional mixologists, so you never have to wait for a drink (Hotel Allegro in Chicago); minibars "pimped" to include all the accoutrements of hedonism, from edible body paint to morning-after hangover relief tablets (Catalina Hotel in South Beach); copies of Playboy and a set of poker chips upon arrival (The Muse in Manhattan); and complimentary lace thongs, should you somehow manage to lose your lingerie (Personality Hotels in San Francisco).

The free undies are part of the hotel chain's newly introduced "Britney breakdown package," designed especially for the vacationer who, like its troubled celebrity namesake, is a little too close to the edge.

The deal includes a gift certificate to a top hair salon and the caveat: "Don't shave your head just yet."

Other destinations focus more on losing oneself in sumptuousness than sin, bringing guests the kind of absurd luxuries normally provided only to the super-rich.
At Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Mexico, for example, an after-dinner dip in the tub is orchestrated entirely by hotel staff. Guests simply choose their preferred options from a "bath menu" -- sea salts, scented oils, premium tequilas and cigars are some of the pleasures on offer -- and the bath is prepared in their room while they enjoy a gourmet dinner.

At Clayoquot Wild-erness Resort, a popular fishing destination in B.C., guests' sleeping tents are outfitted with queen-sized beds, down duvets, Persian carpets and antique furnishings.

"It's for people that remember camping as a kid, but don't want to sleep in a pup tent anymore," says Sue Bosdet, director of sales for Clayoquot.

"They've become a little bit spoiled. They want to get back to nature but rather than roasting marshmallows, they want to sit around the fire while a waiter brings them a cognac and a creme brulee."

Deirdre Campbell, a Canadian public relations executive specializing in tourism, says "immoderation accommodations" tap into the trend of living beyond one's means while on vacation. She calls it "trading up."

According to Pam Danziger, a noted expert on luxury marketing, the model for many of these places is Las Vegas -- a city defined by affordable excess. The idea is to give travellers a "short-term indulgence vacation" that offers maximum pleasure for a reasonable dollar value.

"There's a real focus on the experiences of luxury," says Danziger, author of Why People Buy Things They Don't Need. "It's not buying a Rolex watch or another mink coat or a diamond ring."

Indeed, a 2006 survey by Unity Marketing found 56 per cent of luxury consumers believe "having special experiences that make memories" is of the utmost importance to travel.

New motorcycle film stars New Mexico

Viewers of the popular film "Wild Hogs" are seeing a lot of New Mexico. And the state's convention and tourism officials are trying to attract more visitors among movie-goers.

"The majority of the film was shot in the colorful former mining town of Madrid," says the Albuquerque Convention & Visitors Bureau. Madrid became a ghost town in the 1800s but was revived with a thriving artists' colony in recent years.

"The open roads, breathtaking vistas, magnificent mountain views, and parking and picnic spots along the way have made this a popular scenic route for tourists, motorcyclists and outdoor enthusiasts," said the CVB.

The Disney Touchstone Pictures comedy stars John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy as four middle-aged bikers taking a road trip from Ohio to the West Coast.

The Albuquerque area has 310 days of sunshine. It's is already known as the "Hot Air Balloon Capital of the World."

Traveling With Kids? Be Prepared.

The federal government is advising parents about some of the potential pitfalls of travelling with children.

With the spring school break in progress or imminent in many provinces, the opportunity to visit relatives outside Canada or escape the cold means many children will be travelling alone or with one parent.

Having the proper documents is key. With some specific exceptions, that means each child should have a valid passport and a supporting document, such as a birth certificate or citizenship card.

A parent travelling alone needs a letter from the other parent approving the trip. A notarized letter is recommended.

In the case of a divorced or separated parent, even if he or she has custody, a letter is advisable. And travel officials might require a copy of the separation, divorce or custody decree.

And if the travelling parent fears there might be custody issues that arise while the child is out of the country, the government advises talking to a lawyer.
"Custody arrangements in Canada may not be recognized in some countries," the department said.

Foreign Affairs also said parents who are single because their partners died are advised to carry a certified copy of the death certificates.

Some of the government's other recommendations are common sense.

For example, it says, young children should never be left unattended. But it goes on to suggest that they should carry a piece of ID in case they wander. And parents should carry a recent photo of their children in case they get lost.

For children travelling alone, parents should arrange with the airline to supervise their youngsters. The adult meeting the child at the destination must have proper identification and authorization.

Travelling with infants requires special preparations. The department says the parent should use an approved safety seat, and bring a supply of baby products, including a bottle or pacifier for the child to suck on, to equalize the air pressure when the plane is landing or taking off.

Move over Trump Tower there is another player in town! The Shangri-La Hotel has added itself to the mix of new five star luxury hotels to be built in Toronto. It joins the likes of the Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, the aforementioned Trump Tower and the Hazelton. For a city that thinks of itself as world class, the arrival of these stars would seem to confirm it.

We're talking five stars, to be exact. Though none of these establishments is open yet -- all are in various stages of construction or planning -- this wave of luxury ends a long drought for Toronto. It is one of the few cities of its size and stature without a five-star hotel. Not even the long-standing Four Seasons Yorkville, the city's most popular address for visiting celebrities and business titans, has that ranking.

The Shangri-La, announced this month, will go up on University Avenue, Toronto's grand boulevard, across from the new opera house and close to the financial district. Set to open in 2011, it will bring 220 luxury hotel rooms to the city, a first-rate spa, shops, lounges and restaurants.

After decades of being known by air travelers for serving peanuts and little else, has Southwest Airlines Co. become the frills carrier?

The Dallas-based discounter hasn't added amenities. But legacy carriers are taking freebies away, cutting costs by eliminating pillows, selling snacks and even experimenting with charging for soft drinks.

Southwest pokes fun at its traditional rivals in national television ads. In one spot, a customer is asked to insert coins to use an overhead bin, open a window shade and even recline his seat. In another, a flight attendant ticks off a list of charges for such basics as visiting the restroom and pushing the call button.

The tongue-in-cheek ads signal Southwest's desire to shed its cattle-call reputation, industry analysts say, as it faces heightened competition across the airline industry, including from rival low-cost carriers.

"A lot of what they're talking about are things people think about Southwest," said Stuart Klaskin, a consultant with KCC Aviation Consulting in Coral Gables, Fla. "Southwest is trying to divert the conversation away from its no-frills reputation."

Southwest hasn't changed its commitment to a low-cost operation, said Kevin Krone, the airline's vice president of marketing, sales and distribution.

Yet the ads demonstrate how the landscape has changed.

"We wanted to get the word out that we're not like other airlines," he said. "We're offering all these things that other airlines aren't."

The industry has changed so much in the last few years that customers are no longer sure what to expect when they fly.

Even as carriers cut back on perks in coach class, they're promoting frills for premium-cabin customers. And some low-cost carriers, including Frontier Airlines Inc. and JetBlue Airways Corp., offer satellite television, an amenity you won't find on traditional carriers, even in first class.

Over the years, Southwest pitched itself as a low-cost airline with no frills but quick and efficient service. Unlike its traditional competitors, Southwest didn't offer meals. Refreshments consisted of a small bag of peanuts and a drink.

But even though its largest rivals have slashed many amenities, "people still really think of Southwest as the ultra no-frills airline," Mr. Klaskin said.

Cheap frills

And frills, even small ones, may be resonating louder with customers than they used to.

"Ultimately, when pricing is equal, those things can sometimes sway a customer from one carrier to another," Mr. Klaskin said.

Competition is intensifying in the airline industry. Restructuring efforts during the last five years by carriers both in and outside of bankruptcy proceedings have turned all major airlines into "low-cost" carriers, dulling Southwest's operational cost edge.

And heightened competition from other low-fare competitors has pushed Southwest to enter hotly contested markets, such as Denver and Philadelphia, where it faces entrenched rivals on their home turf.

"Everyone has to fight for every passenger," Mr. Krone said.

Although Southwest has enjoyed a powerful brand image for low fares, its cattle-call reputation – which is largely connected to its open-seating policy – has been hard to shake when wooing new customers.

The carrier still lacks what many consider to be the chief in-flight amenity – a seat assignment.

Southwest officials have energetically defended the carrier's open-seating policy, saying that some very enthusiastic customers like it better than assigned seats. Even so, the carrier has considered trying different seating and boarding preferences.

Some industry consultants say it's only a matter of time before Southwest must change its service offerings as it competes more directly with other discounters.

Other carriers are pushing perks in their marketing. Fort Worth-based American Airlines Inc., which last month announced a major push for New York customers, has touted investments in its premium cabin seating and its Admirals Club lounges.

Continental, the only major U.S. carrier that still has complimentary in-flight meal service in coach, has emphasized its cabin comforts and frequent-flier perks – a strategy that analysts say has helped the airline keep a more positive reputation among customers.

Southwest's low-cost rivals are also calling attention to their richer in-flight experience, including satellite entertainment.

At the same time, analysts say the unbundling of extras aboard a flight will probably continue as airlines try to eke out more revenue.

"There seems to be this mentality in the industry to really squeeze the customer for every penny," said Tim Sieber, an airline consultant for the Boyd Group in Evergreen, Colo. "This is where Southwest can take the lead in the marketplace without having to put any cash on the barrel."

Mr. Sieber pointed to recent announcements by Miramar, Fla.-based Spirit Airlines Inc. and British Airways PLC that they would charge for checking a second piece of luggage as well as other carriers that charge for food.

"They're charging for things that were previously included in the ticket price," he said.

Mr. Sieber said that as Southwest takes the lead on fare increases, it must make clear to customers that its product matches and in some cases exceeds that of its competitors.

'Perception of value'

"Southwest needs to raise the perception of value that they provide to the customer," Mr. Sieber said.

In general, passengers book airline tickets based on airfare and flight times. But after that, amenities, service and frequent-flier programs come into play.

"I don't think people will pay more for TV or even for free pillows," Mr. Krone said. "Our point is, when you think about the fare, you have to think about all the other things you pay along the way."

Randy Petersen, publisher of Inside Flyer magazine and WebFlyer.com, said many travelers have resigned themselves to the idea of extra fees.

"People relate it to the banking experience," Mr. Petersen said. "Every little thing you want is an extra charge."

That's exactly the assumption Southwest is trying to change – at least when it comes to its own service.

"Other airlines may match our fares, but then you have all those other charges during your journey," Mr. Krone said.

"We want to make sure that our customers and other people out there flying realize that there are choices out there," he said.

Zen Mexico Beach Escape!

When I was twenty-two I first went to the Mayan Riviera and fell in love. I wanted a perfect white sandy beach, turquoise blue warm water and I wanted to not wear shoes for a week. I found this perfect simplicity at a little collection of beach cabanas near the ruins of Tulum.

While in those days I was happy tying my hammock to a palapa structure and eating bean tacos for the week, I am looking for a little bit more luxury at this point in my life. Enough to make it comfortable, not enough to take away the simple charm of getting away from it all.

With today's mega resorts taking over much of the sand beaches of my beloved Mayan, there is still some refuge of that old beach vacation to be had at the Shambala Petit Hotel, a no-frills yet bewitching spot at the southern end of Tulum.

When people imagine a thatched-roof, swinging-hammock, beach-bum vacation in Tulum, this is the place they dream of. Imagine a carefully maintained beach, with its impossibly soft, white sand; and the small, delightful details such as the tassels and mother-of-pearl ornaments hanging from the white beach umbrellas, and the splashes of orange in the form of throw pillows, beach towels, and pole-mounted flags throughout the property.

The casitas are simple, meaning a bed and a ceiling fan, and not much else. In fact, the casitas are not decorated at all, but even the world's greatest interior designer couldn't compete with what's right outside the doors. Eight of the ten rooms have private baths, lit only by candlelight.

Passport Help

Passport Canada is in the process of hiring 300 additional workers to deal with the surge in demand from Canadian travellers on tight winter-vacation schedules, a spokeswoman for the federal agency said on Friday.

Passport Canada had already hired 200 workers to deal with the demand created by tighter U.S. regulations, Francine Charbonneau said. Staff had been able to process 20,000 applications a day in the weeks before the current crunch, up from 13,000 a day. However, daily applications surged to 21,000 in January, and Passport Canada is facing a delay of 25 business days on top of the standard 20 it requires to process an application by mail.

Those who cannot afford to wait 15 days for Passport Canada to send back their original documents are now pursuing a second option: getting an emergency birth certificate ($30, plus a $15 rush fee) so they can then apply for an expedited passport in person for an additional $70. (The old birth certificate is immediately cancelled for security reasons.)

Jason Wesley, a spokesman for the Ontario Ministry of Government Services, said the high volume of passport applicants has spilled over into the issuing of birth certificates.

“We believe that increase is mainly due to the fact that Canadians need passports now to travel to the United States. And in order to receive a passport, Passport Canada requires a valid birth certificate,” he said, noting there was an 11-per-cent increase in the number of applications received this January, compared with the same period last year.

Those requesting an emergency birth certificate must show up at the Toronto office, he said, or get their MPP to fax their documents for them.

Airbus A380 Finally Launches!

The long-delayed Airbus A380, the world's biggest passenger plane, took its first public flight yesterday as more than 200 journalists and company bosses took off from Toulouse on a two-hour flight over the Pyrenees piloted by British and German captains keen to show off the plane's much publicised "quiet, smooth and fuel-efficient ride".

It was the 2,000th take-off for the superjumbo, which has already flown around the world on a series of tests, passing the north and south poles and stopping off at air shows. But it was the first time the media were able to film the spacious interior of the double-decker, which some airlines are considering fitting with a gym, shops, bars and showers.

The most complex passenger plane ever built, with a production line stretching between France, Britain, Germany and Spain, the A380 project has been beset with problems since engineers struggled to install the 300 miles of wiring, setting off a spiral of delays that led to boardroom turmoil, executive resignations and the wrath of airline buyers who are currently negotiating compensation.

The A380 has a capacity of 840 people, but as airlines compete to give premium passengers more space for more money, it will likely hold an average of 525, compared with around 360 on a Boeing 747. When it launches for Singapore Airlines later this year it could have features such as a gym, cocktail bar, nursery, and private first-class cabin suites with their own sliding doors, desk and bed.

The digital entertainment systems will aim to offer up to 80 films on demand at any time, as well as live TV and potentially on-board internet. The seat-back screens, at around 18 by 10 inches, are almost twice the size of screens on today's planes.

But with the widest cabin in passenger airline history, and 50% more floor surface than the 747, the economy seats are 1-inch wider than on current jumbos and stressed travellers will benefit from seeing more space above their heads, more room to stretch and to walk up and down stairs.

Pearson's Terminal 2 Closes

I would like to feel sad about Terminal 2 closing on Monday night, but I can't. As a frequent user of Toronto's massive airport, anything and everything they do to make the experience better is welcomed with open arms by me.

Sure, Terminal 2 had convenient parking and modern seventies architecture, but it was massive and the interior was dark and gloomy. My lasting memory of good old Terminal 2 will be the endless hallways you had to walk down to get out of the damn place. The walk to customs or the baggage carousel's took forever!

To accommodate the traffic from Terminal 2, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) has added a new $800-million expansion to the already revamped Terminal 1 called "Pier F" which opened Monday night. Pier F will be capable of handling 38 million passengers a year and is approximately 84,000 square-metres. Officials say the new wing is aimed at "simplifying and enhancing" the travel experience, with 25 new gates for international traffic, 680 metres of moving walkways, and Canada's largest duty-free store. I say bring it on!

Pier F was in development for eight years, and with it comes a new runway as well as new taxiways, utilities, roads, bridges, an on-airport train system, and upgrades to Terminal 3. When all is said and done, the plan is to simplify the transfer process for passengers. And again I say bring it on.

Airport travel is not the fun and exciting experience it used to be. Increased security screenings, line ups, rushed transfer times and crowded planes all combine to make it a stressful and harried process. Anything, and I mean anything they can do to make it better is okay by me. Will I miss Terminal 2? Nope.

BA Strike Cancelled

British Airways (BA) has announced the cancellation of the proposed strike action by its cabin crew, members of The Transport and General Workers’ Union planned for January 30-31, February 5-7, and February 12-14.

As their Web site states, the carrier has reinstated a complete flight schedule for January 30 and January 31. Travelers wishing to travel on any reinstated flight must contact BA or their travel agent as soon as possible to confirm travel.

Conversely, the carrier has advised passengers not to go to the airport unless they hold a confirmed booking on a reinstated flight.

Passengers who have made alternative flight arrangements and are satisfied with these arrangements do not need to rebook or reconfirm.

BA Strike Delayed

A proposed strike at British Airways (BA) has been postponed for 24 hours to allow more time for negotiations between cabin crew staff and management.

Members of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) had been due to start a three-day strike on January 29th. As a result, travelers flying on this day should be able to travel as normal. However, if negotiations are not settled by this date, planned industrial action will still go ahead on January 30th and 31st, in a move that could affect thousands of travelers.

BA has put together a set of contingency plans and have communicated these with the travel industry. If you think you may be affected by the strike, please contact your travel agent.
